Mike Chabala Poses for NOH8
The NOH8 Campaign is one of today’s most recognized photographic silent protests on same-sex marriage bans, specifically California Proposition [Prop 8]. People from all walks of life have been photographed as a sign of their support of the protest against Prop 8. With more than 5,500 photos, the campaign has included many actors, musicians, and professional athletes.
Mike Chabala, from Major League Soccer club Houston Dynamo, is now one of the newest additions to the NOH8 Campaign’s roster of athlete supporters. Appearing live on Fox 26 Morning News with campaign founders Adam Bouska and Jeff Parshley, the 26-year-old defender said, “It’s quite an honor when I got offered to do this. It’s not a Republican issue or a Democratic issue. Simply enough, it’s a human rights issue.”
Chabala stressed the importance of discussing Prop 8 in Texas, which is perceived as a conservative state. “Being here in Texas and to be involved with [Bouska and Parshley] to spread the cause on such a great campaign and issue, it’s pretty important for me. So, I’m happy to be here,” he said.
Bouska and Parshley travel the U.S. to take photographs for the campaign, which are then posted on the NOH8 website. By using duct tape over models’ mouths, to symbolize those who are forced into silence by Prop 8, and with “NOH8” painted on models’ cheeks, the pair have created simple but strong photos with a powerful message.
